    Gamers As Designers Project

    In my research, I attempt to uncover the productive activities that occur around videogames, casting “gamers as designers” (looking chiefly at The Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft, and game design in Adobe Flash). In particular, I’m interested in the ways passionate fans of games construct new stories, gameplay strategies, mods, scenarios, and even new games — plus, trying to figure out what this tells us about learning in online communities, and how these practices might help learners (young and old) develop so-called “21st century skills.”

    Games & Learning

    Over the years, I’ve studied cognition and learning in various contexts, focusing recently and intensely on how learning “works” in the interactive medium of videogames. I’ve been interested in games since the olden times of text-based “interactive fiction” through the recent trend of popular music and rhythm games (such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band). My research is currently about trying to understand meaning-making with games, how game expertise develops, and how might we, as educators, transfer skills learned in-game to other settings.
